Clive Murphy
MONO

MONO is a site-specific kinetic inflatable sculpture specially
fabricated for the gallery by New York based, Irish artist
Clive Murphy. Working directly with the architecturally
idiosyncratic space, Murphy's singular work will activate the
physical core of the building with a minimal gesture that prods
at notions of high modernist monumentality.

Clive Murphy's practice concerns itself with both site and
surface - not only the position of the individual within an
increasingly 'mass' oriented environment but also the contours,
the landscapes through which this environment is revealed.

'In my work I'm constantly interested in examining the peripheral,
insignificant and sometimes seemingly ridiculous as a means of
illustrating a sense of interconnectivity and also rebutting
certain hierarchical value systems, so in this context building
an architecturally orientated inflatable from plastic seems
appropriate.'

Murphy is currently a resident artist at the Irish Museum of
Modern Art, Dublin and will commence a nine-month residency at
the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, New York (from September
2007). Recent solo exhibitions include: SCAPES, Magnan Projects
Gallery, New York; PNEUTOPIA, Mercer Union Gallery, Toronto;
I WANT TO BE YOU, Crawford Municipal Art Gallery, Cork;
WHY, O WHY, O WHY? - British Council commission in association
with CityMine(d), Brussels.
