Designed by Atelier, 'Pallas Heights 2003-2006',
won the prestigious and singular ICAD gold award for 2007
by an international jury. This is the first time that a gold
has been awarded in 4 years.
Pallas Heights was a series of ground breaking contemporary
art exhibitions that occurred in four flats in a northside
municipal house block that was listed for future demolition.
Pallas Heights arose as a sustained considered reaction to
the steady trend of diminishing creative space for artists in
Dublin. It was conceived as a short-term project space for
artists, however with 18 shows and special projects taking
place there over the course of 3 years it became something
that went far beyond its initial premise.
What emerged through the programme were projects that
re-imagined the site as zone of contention, allowing its
histories, its extended contexts, and its inevitable future
demise to become relevant to the concerns of the exhibiting
artists. Pallas Heights was unique in that it provided a
platform for many young and emerging artists to experiment
within a context that is separate and outside art gallery
conventions. The project was widely covered by the press,
both local and internationally, in terms of both the
exhibition programme and the issues raised by the project's
placement.
Pallas Heights 2003-2006 features critical essays by
Caoimhín Mac Giolla Léith (curator, critic and lecturer
in Modern Irish at UCD, Turner Prize Judge 2005), Lucy Cotter
